Birding Safari in Uganda

BIRDING SAFARI KAMPALA AND MURCHISON FALLS FOR 7 DAYS

First Day:
One of the several bird species begin by birding at the Uganda Wild life Education Centre (UWEC), a Zoologist?s center for captive wild animals, that has attracted more than 170 species of wild birds, 10 species of weavers for example the uncommon Northern masked weaver, Golden Backed, Black Necked, Northern Brown Throated, Grosbeak, Baglafect and many more. 5 species of flycatcher, African paradise, Red bellied, and others, raptors like Gabar Goshawk, small banded snake Eagle, shikra, African Goshawk, African fish Eagle, African Hubby etc. and many other species which include captive animals. Continue to Botanical gardens for another birding experience. Take lunch, rest, then in the evening tour the sewage lagoons. Come back for dinner and an overnight.

Second Day:
Rise up to take breakfast and go to the Heritage trail, which is a ten-minutes drive from the Airport. Anticipate to find the following species: -
Brown crowned Tchargra, Black cuckoo shrike, Brown Twin spot, mustached Warbler, violet backed starlings, yellow bill, Southern Banded snake Eagle, Red shouldered cuckoo shrike, and many others. Proceed to Lutembe to have lunch. Then take on a boat to look for the papyrus canary. The thousands of Grey Headed Gulls, white winged black tems, papyrus Gonolek, and go on birding up to sunset. An egret and other birds on a buffalo.



Third Day:
Have an early breakfast and continue to Mabamba swamps, which is another Important Bird Area (IBA) having a population of a round 5 shoebills. Most of the birding at this place is done while canoeing and other species to be viewed may involve; Goliath, purple, long toed plovet, African water Rail, Grey and black headed Herons, squacco Heron, Pygmy Goose, Yellow Billed Duck, Black crake, white faced whistling duck, swamp moorhen, Allen?s Gallinule, African Jacana etc. Sitatunga Antelope (swamp Antelope) and many others. Continue to Kampala and make a stop over at a swamp which may show yellow crowned Bishop, papyrus Gonolek, Weyn?s weaver, white winged warbler, and many others. Carry your packed lunch and go on birding up to sunset as you continue for dinner in Kampala.

Fourth Day:
Wake up for breakfast then continue to Mabira forest for an hour?s drive for forest birding looking for species like yellow whiskered Greenbul, white spotted Fluff tail, toro Greenbul, Forest Robin, Buff spotted woodpecker, Grey spotted woodpecker, leaf love, Red headed Blue bill, yellow spotted Baribet, Grey throated Baribet, yellow Rumped Tinker bird, Red headed Malimbe, yellow Throated Tinker bird, Blue Breasted Kingfisher, African pygmy, shining blue, woodland kingfishers, Red tailed Ant Thrush Chestnut, wattle Eye, Chin spot Batis, Banded wattle Eye, yellow mantiled, Brown capped, Black Billed, Weyn?s weavers, purple headed starling, violet backed starling and many other charming species. Have a picnic lunch and go on birding till sunset. Come back to Uganda?s capital for dinner and overnight.

Day 5:
Have breakfast then go for a three-hour drive through the Luwero triangle to Murchison falls national as you anticipate to find more than 450 species. Make a stop over for a ?leg stretch? which may show olive bellied Bronze and copper sunbirds, compact weaver, Dark chanting Goshawk, saddle billed stork and many others. Head for a stop over in Masindi and have lunch. Proceed through the park as we bird to the top of the Great falls where they drop 45 meters and forces its way through a 7-meter fissure. Rock pranticoles, a mixed flock of swifts, Africa pied Wagtail, reptiles like Red headed Agama. Go on birding to your accommodation as you wait for dinner plus an overnight.

Day 6:
Have breakfast and start on a game drive looking for species like Chestnut capped weaver, silver bird, common Drongo, spotted morning Thrush Bruce?s Green pigeon, Namaque Dove, white Fronted Black chat, Black billed Dove, Vinaceous Dove, Carmine Bee-Eater, Red Throated, Swallow Tailed Bee-Eater, Isabelline and Northern wheatears, shoebills, saddle bill, Grey crowned cranes at the Delta and other game such as Roth child?s Giraffe, cape Buffalo-Elephant, silver Backed jackals, Jackson?s Hartebeest, lions, oribit, kobs, and many others. Come back for lunch and rest as you move on for a boat cruise to the bottom of the falls encountering huge Nile crocodiles, Hippos and game taking water birds like lesser jacana, white necked stork, fulvous whistling Ducks, a diversity of Herons, Egyptian plover, spur winged plover, Rock pranticoles, water Thick-knee and many others.

Day 7.
Have an early morning breakfast and en-route to Kampala. Make a short stop over to bird along the turn to Sambiya River lodge species like Tawny Eagle, martial Eagle, Grey Horn bill, Grey kestnel. Grey Headed Kingfisher, Helmeted and crested Guinea fowl, Senegal coucal may be viewed. Start on a primate walk in the Kanio pabidi forest, a sector of the Budongo forest, chimpanzees, Black and white Colobus, Red tailed and blue monkeys and many olive Baboons may be viewed. Birds such as white thighed hornbills, Great blue and Ross? Turaccos, Black billed Turacco, African Green pigeons, Afep pigeons, Nahan?s Francolin and Narina?s Trogon may be viewed.
Continue for lunch in Masindi, then proceed to Uganda?s capital for dinner plus an overnight.

Note:
There are two kinds of safaris, some want the luxury safari (Lodges or hotels) and others want the Budget safaris  (Camping and simple accommodation). The prices change according to the type of accommodation, however, the other activities will not b changed. Do not be afraid to ask.
