RWENZORI OR MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON
The highest mountain range in Africa is the Rwenzori. Rwenzori?s very high and impressive summits, Margerita, which is 5,109m and Alexandra 5083m on Mount Stanley, are only exceeded by height elsewhere in Africa by only Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, both of which are extinct volcanoes standing in isolation above the surrounding plains.

Among East Africa?s major summits, the Rwenzori Mountains are special in a way that they are not volcanic in origin. However, they do rise directly from the Rift valley floor and their formation, like that of Mount Kilimanjaro and Kenya, was attached to the geological glacial peaks in the Rwenzori?s Mt. Speke at 4,890m, Mount Emin at 4,727 meters, Mount Gersi at 4,715 meters and Mount Luigi da Savoia at 4,627 meters.. The Rwenzori?s are mainly famous for their challenging hiking and climbing possibilities, however, the range is also a habitat to a variety of animals which include mammals plus 177 bird species, many of the bird species being Albertine Rift endemics.
